The Tallahassee Museum’s 10-year-old male panther has been euthanized at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, the museum said Wednesday.
Russell Daws, Tallahassee Museum executive director, said the museum didn’t anticipate having to take such action, but the panther had an untreatable illness.
“We thought it might have been an object he had swallowed, but when he didn’t recover, we knew we had to take him in to get checked out further,” Daws said.
A specialist at UF determined that the panther had an aggressive internal tumor that was painful and not treatable.
“He was a great animal who was a favorite of museum visitors and staff alike,” said animal curator Mike Jones. “He arrived at the museum with his sister when they were 6 months old and was a happy and playful animal throughout his life. His sister remains at the museum, in good health.” The two panthers came to the museum though a breeding program and had celebrated their 10th birthday in April.
Daws said he hopes the museum will be able to get another panther to replace the male, but they’re happy that they still have the sister. But the brother will be missed.
“My animal staff is heartbroken,” Daws said. “It’s like losing a friend.”
